Internationalism

Being an International School is about bringing the excitement of meaningful contact with partner schools from across the globe and using this authentic learning to bring the world into the classroom and create rich learning experiences. The spirit of Internationalism permeates all aspects of school life as we aim to broaden our students’ horizons and create authentic engagement opportunities for all.

It is a legacy that is close to Earl Mountbatten's heart as President of the United World College: recognising that an excellent education encompasses global collaboration and learning not just for students but for staff.

We are proud that our work and ethos has been recognised with the British Council's International School Award, and it acknowledges our active collaboration with our partner schools in India, China and The Gambia. We are quite clear that internationalism, in our school, engenders positive and informed attitudes towards the wider world, a diverse and stimulating curriculum and ensures that we develop young people who are culturally and linguistically empathetic, tolerant and aware.

The Gambia - a partnership with Mansa Colley Bojang School

Every 2 years, we visit our partnership school to support them in improving access to education for students, with a particular focus on Sustainable Development Goal 2 and on keeping girls in education. Year 7 tutor groups focus on sponsoring girls in school, providing vital funds that cover their exam fees, school uniform, meals, equipment and books. Later in the Upper School year groups, students have the opportunity to join the expedition to The Gambia to meet and work with the students and teachers during our time there.

China - The Mandarin Excellence Programme

The Mountbatten School is proud to be part of the Mandarin Excellence Programme where students learn Mandarin as part of their timetable. Students host the Chinese New Year Celebrations for the whole school through assemblies, tutor resources and a traditional Chinese tea ceremony for staff and students, a highlight of the school calendar year! As part of the Mandarin Excellence Programme, students also visit China in Year 9 where they get to practise their new language skills and fully immerse themselves in Chinese culture.

India - partnerships with Vikas Bharati and Fazlani L’Academie Globale

The Mountbatten School has a longstanding relationship with Vikas Bharati in New Delhi, India and we have collaborated on various projects over the years. One of the highlights from this partnership was having the collaborative work from both schools selected to be part of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Pageant in London on the 5 June 2022.

In 2024, we took part in a climate action project with Fazlani L’Academie Globale and Pomegranate Workshops in Mumbai, India. During this 8-week online interactive project, students from both schools researched and created conservation awareness campaigns, based on their local environment, and then shared these during an online presentation event. We were also very fortunate to be able to welcome guests from Mumbai to host a live Q&A session with our students!

Global Exchange Programme

In 2024, we welcomed the return of our international exchanges programmes on The Mountbatten School site. We have enjoyed having students from across the world interacting with our students and staff. These exchanges provide excellent opportunities for students and staff to learn about new cultures and engage with our global community on a meaningful level to improve language and 3D curriculum skills. It is also a superb experience for visiting students to experience the wide variety of subjects and extra-curricular activities that Mountbatten has to offer on a daily basis!

Celebrating Modern Foreign Languages

At The Mountbatten School, we place a high value on students' access to a rich diet of languages and cultures. Faculties host a variety of activities across the year and within the curriculum to create opportunities for our students to develop their understanding of different cultures and use their newly discovered language skills in a practical way. In recent years, MFL students have led the European Day of Languages and had bespoke career presentations directly linked to the language they study. In addition to this, we have had students qualify for the finals of the regional Spelling Bee UOS where they competed against other schools in their language of study.

In addition to the range of cultural trips on offer, the MFL department hosts an international exchange between our Year 9 and Year 10 French students and a partnership school in Colombes, France. The aim of this partnership is to create opportunities for students from both schools to foster a deeper appreciation of different cultures, create new friendships and instil their lifelong learning of languages.

We are continuously looking for authentic partnerships and global collaboration projects for our students and staff to engage with. If you are interested in working with us, please email info@mountbatten.school with FAO - Miss Roodt - Internationalism.
