The clocks have gone back, the nights are darker and the autumnal feel is definitely moving in a winterly direction. We’ve had wind, rain and thunderstorms throughout the week and as I’ve walked the school, I’ve noticed that whilst many of the students have been protected from the elements by a waterproof coat, there are still a lot of children without outdoor coats. As the weather gets colder and more inclement, could I ask parents to encourage their children to bring their coat to school (rather than leave it at home)!
You will have seen from the posts on social media that the school has embraced ‘Movember’ with staff and students in various stages of burgeoning moustaches. Like many families, our school community hasn’t been spared the worry and heartache of testicular cancer, prostate cancer and mental health issues amongst some of its members and I’m pleased that it’s a cause that the school is embracing. As we know, testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men and making sure our youngsters are aware is a positive step.
The second half of the Autumn Term always a time of hard work for the students but one where the end is filled with the promise and delight of celebration and festivity. I wish you all much joy and hope in the coming months.

CRY Screenings
On Wednesday 2 November, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) screened 95 of our Year 11s and 5 staff. Sue Fisher (Standing), alongside many students, raised money so that this screening could take place.
It is important to us that our young people are safe. Having the opportunity to check one’s heart is such a positive thing. Sue’s son, Phil, was an ex Mountbatten student and it is in his memory that we continue to raise awareness.
Thank you to every student who attended. The CRY team commented on how mature and beautifully mannered they all were. Thank you also to Mrs Brooks for her hard work coordinating this event.

Hands-on Humanities Day
On Saturday 19 November, Southampton University is holding a day of activities giving children a chance to get an insight into some of their research. Please click on the button below to book your free tickets and find out more information!
Please note that parents and carers are able to set a daily limit for students so that they do not spend all their money in the school canteen in one day. Please take a moment this weekend to review the limit on SCOPAY and make sure that your child has enough of a daily allowance to purchase their lunch.
Well done to our brilliant STEM leaders who planned and delivered a session for Year 5 students at Halterworth on forensics. All the children had a great time and engaged fully in all the activities planned.

Top Tip
Goal 15: Life on land
Goal 15 aims to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and stop biodiversity loss. Where "bio" means "life," "biodiversity" refers to the variety of living organisms within an ecosystem. For ecosystems to be resilient to threats such as climate change, natural hazards and air, water and land pollution, they need high levels of biodiversity. We also rely on high levels of biodiversity as we benefit for so many naturally occurring ecosystem benefits such as the air we breath, the food we eat and the water we drink.
What can we do to achieve this goal?
1.6 billion people currently rely of forests for their livelihoods and forests are considered a backbone of sustainable economies. Our tropical rainforests alone are home to over 50% of land species on earth. As such, one action that you can take is to check where your products are coming from and how they are sustainably managed or sourced from our forests. Take some time before you reach the checkout to read the labels on your products and opt for the sustainable option. This means that the money goes back into the organisations protecting these areas so they can spend this on conserving more areas. Look out for the logos below when you're doing your shopping!
Water Colours
This week the challenge is to make an amazing demonstration of the difference temperature makes to water.
Congratulations to Advik B 7IBR and Ella C 8JBY for sharing their excellent sprinklers last week.
The Mountbatten School Library has recently invested in a series of non-fiction graphic novels for students to enjoy. We have a wide range of graphic novels covering various topics such as volcanoes, renewable energy and major historical events. Featuring some beautiful artwork, these books are quick and easy to read and are a fantastic way to learn about new topics.
In RHSE this half-term, students have made a great start to their discussion based lessons where they have explored a range of topics.
Year 7
Students have identified their own tutor group ground rules required to create a safe and secure environment for making their contributions to the discussions taking place in lessons. They have been looking at what teamwork is and how an effective team can drive positive changes. Their transition to secondary school has been a chance to explore how they feel about change and how they can prepare and manage their feelings towards change. How to manage friendships and know what makes a good friend has also formed part of their discussions.
Year 8
Students have been busy identifying their strengths and areas for development by considering their interests, skills and personality traits and then exploring what others recognise in them also. They have also spent time considering personal safety, identifying risks and dangers and what decisions can be made to remain safe, particularly when out in their own time. October is Black History month so Year 8 have been busy exploring discrimination and prejudice as well as stereotyping.
Year 9
As students approach the Upper School, it has been a time to reflect on standards and how they have changed. They have looked at what makes a healthy relationship and the importance of commitment within any form of relationship such as friendships, family and intimate relationships. Students have also looked at the growing importance of media within their lives, considering the importance of Internet safety, alongside the distribution of misinformation and how to spot it.
Year 10
Mental health and well-being has been explored through looking at how the media often portray it and what campaigns have been trying to raise awareness it’s importance. This has been linked to changes and challenges that adolescence can bring to people’s mental health and how positive rethinking can be a tool to encourage positive wellbeing. The signs and symptoms of low mood and poor mental health have been discussed and ways of communicating feelings have been explored, highlighting the differences between healthy and unhealthy coping strategies.
Year 11
Students have started this busy and final year of school by revisiting the high standards that are expected on them and looking at how stereotypes are formed and dealt with, reflecting on their own importance of being non-judgemental and their responsibilities when they leave school. They have also looked at emotional wellbeing with a focus on the pressure that they may feel upon them in the year ahead. Strategies to manage stress and how to balance busy lives with all the expectations to achieve their dreams, even the importance of a good nights sleep. They have looked at their ambitions and what they will need to achieve them, or safety nets in place should something change.
Should your child wish to seek support in any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
Childline also offer a range of support and resources.
