Mr Davenport - Assistant Headteacher

I hope this newsletter finds you all safe, happy and well.

With a few weeks to go before half term, we’ve been getting Year 11 ready for their mock exams which will be straight after the half term break. Though mock exams are for Year 11, the advice we give would be the same for any student sitting any assessment or exam.

The purpose of the mocks is to give the student an experience as close as possible to the real thing, just like musicians rehearse and boxers use sparring partners, so that they can learn from it and have time to get support and fix things that need fixing. One can only do that if the mocks are taken seriously - I hope you will be able to support your child to do this.

You will be able to see the assembly I gave to our Year 11 using a link that will be in a letter we will send home before the half term break as well as on our social media channels.

Year 10 Boys' Rugby Team - Hampshire Cup Final

It was a real pleasure to take the Year 10 U15 Rugby team to the Hampshire Schools Cup final at Alton RFC on Wednesday 2 February. Mountbatten lost 34-26 in the main event against Portsmouth Grammar School, but the boys were a credit to the school. So much so that the referee came up to the boys after to say thank you for playing the game in the correct spirit.

A big thank you to Mr Miller (site team) who stepped in to drive the minibus, Mr Rice for providing the opportunities to play at this level and Dr Cleland and Dr Halfpenny who put Fred's thumb back into place after he dislocated it! Always handy to have two GP parents on the touch line!

Well done boys!

Covid Vaccinations Reminder

The school age immunisation team are booked to attend schools and deliver the COVID 19 vaccinations. The date of the school session has been booked at least 12 weeks after the first visit to school. All students who have now turned 12 will  be eligible for the vaccination and all students who are 16 and in Year 11 will be eligible for the vaccination.

If you have consented to your child receiving the COVID 19 vaccination, there must be a minimum gap of 12 weeks between the first and second vaccination. There must also be a minimum of 12 weeks between a positive PCR test and a vaccination.

If your child misses the vaccinations in school, you will be able to them an appointment using the National Booking System (NBS) Click the button to book.

Book your child's Covid vaccination online

If you have any queries, you can email Missed Vaccinations or visit the Hampshire Healthy Families Website.

Maths Update for Year 11s

You will know from previous letters that every year 11 student gets a GCSE practice paper each Friday to complete to the best of their ability by the end of the following week. This programme is brilliant! It helps us get fantastic results each year and every student can make great progress if they use these booklets in the correct way!

To get the best out of these booklets, students need to work on them throughout the week so that they know what they need help on and have time for the teachers to give it to them. Already, we can see students who put effort into these booklets starting to make fantastic progress and the work that they are doing is going to be fantastic preparation for the mock exams and for those in the summer.

Unfortunately, some students are leaving this work to the last day, or worse still, are simply copying them from a friend or online. This isn’t going to help them get better at maths - it’s exactly the same as going to the gym and copying how many push-ups and pull-ups our friend has done; it might look good on paper in the short term, but it’s not making them stronger, not making them better at maths. They aren’t preparing themselves for the main event in the summer.

A good way to support your child’s maths is to check how much of it they have done every few days - are they leaving it to the last minute? If they have answers in their booklets, you could ask them to explain them to you to check that they understand. If they’re stuck on something and you can’t help, make sure they see their teacher. It’s our job and we love to do it!

GCSE Maths revision guides and workbooks continue to be available for sale. These can be purchased on SCOPAY. Sets 1-3 require the Higher tier and Sets 4-6 the Foundation tier books.

Thanks for your support!

Top Tip

Walking or cycling to school is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. If you are not able to walk or cycle, think about getting the bus or car sharing to reduce the number of car journeys you make over the course of a week.

A huge 'thank you' to Hazel Tomkinson, MD of Rich Products Corporation, who have a world-class manufacturing facility in Andover. Hazel talked to Y10 Food Technology students about careers in food science and the many opportunities available within the industry. We are very proud of our students and the way they conducted themselves, coming up with some excellent questions during the Q&A segment of the session. Students also very much appreciated the cookies Hazel brought along, fresh from the factory! Thank you rich_products #TheMountbattenSchool #MBCareers #ProudOfMB
