Mr E Gentle - Director of Science Academy incorporating Computer Science

Happy Easter & Stay Safe Online!

Wishing you all a joyful and restful Easter break! We hope you take this time to relax, enjoy time with family and friends, and of course, indulge in some chocolate eggs.

As you spend more time online during the holidays, remember these top e-safety tips:

  • Think before you share – Avoid posting personal details or location information.
  • Stay private – Keep your social media accounts set to private and only accept requests from people you know.
  • Be cautious with links – Don’t click on suspicious links or download unknown attachments.
  • Speak up – If something online makes you uncomfortable, talk to a trusted adult.
  • But most importantly—don’t forget to switch off now and then! Take a break from screens, get outside, meet up with friends in person, or just enjoy some proper downtime.

Have a fantastic Easter, stay safe, and see you after the break!

eSports

Tuesdays have been a hive of activity in the Computing department with our simracing team taking part in the latter stages of the Williams Student Racing League. Despite a few incidents, the team currently sits fourth in the standings with one race to go; both Ollie A 9DDY and Casper M 7TDN have recorded best finishes of fourth place themselves. A big thank you goes out to all of those who have driven, tested, operated our broadcast on Twitch, race-engineered or supported the team this season; it's been a big success considering it's our first go!

The action pauses for the Easter holidays, but the team will compete in the live final at Williams Racing HQ on 29 April. The race will be streamed live at 2pm via http://www.twitch.tv/williamsesports, and you can watch previous races (and follow us for future competitions) at http://www.twitch.tv/mountbattenesports. We hope to start a Rocket League team and run some tournaments at school in the near future - stay tuned!

RSHE lessons have continued to be taught each week in tutor groups. Do ask your child what they have been learning about and encourage them to ask further questions.

In lesson, teachers use a range of oracy-based strategies, including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking skills. Below are links to more information regarding RSHE.

  • Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) (Secondary) - GOV.UK
  • Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education - GOV.UK
  • Understanding Relationships, Sex and Health Education at your child's secondary school: a guide for parents - GOV.UK

Year 7

This half-term Year 7 will be exploring puberty, looking at the process of physical and emotional changes that occur as children grow into adults, considering the different ways puberty affects boys and girls. They will go on to identify what influences they have around them and how to maintain appropriate behaviours during adolescence.

Year 8

This half-term Year 8 will be exploring healthy relationships, consent and intimate relationships with an introduction to contraception. They will also consider online safety and relationships.

Year 9

Year 9 will begin the New Year considering what a healthy relationship is, what it means to be committed to relationships, including intimate ones. They will also explore different contraceptives and discuss STI’s and how they are transmitted.

Year 10

Year 10 will be exploring influences around them and peer relationships. They will consider the impact of gang culture and the risks of County Lines and drug activity. They will then prepare for the start of their work experience.

Year 11

Year 11 will be completing their last topics of RSHE before developing study and revision skills ahead of the GCSE exams. The final lessons include Self-examination, sexual health and medical appointments and pregnancy.  Videos supporting the self-checking sessions include: Check Your Pair – A How-To Guide and https://vimeo.com/29898544

Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.

Our message reporting system 'TootToot', can also be used to request support or report a concern.

Other local support can be found at Youth In Romsey and No Limits.

Childline also offers a range of support and resources.

Part of the healthy living topics include discussing the need for good sleep habits. Support with teenage sleep can be found at Teen Sleep Hub, which is part of The Sleep Charity.
