Happy New Year to all our students and their parents and carers and welcome back to school. I hope everyone had a lovely break and amongst all the festivities, had at least some rest!
I would like to congratulate and thank all our wonderful readers, singers and instrumentalists who played in Romsey Abbey for our Christmas Carol Service. I know that all my colleagues and trustees were enormously proud of this outstanding showcase. Thank you to all my colleagues in Music and other departments without whom an event and opportunity of this quality and scale could never happen.
The Autumn Term was very successful. As you know, we introduced some important changes to our approach to behaviour in September. These have had a very positive impact which many staff, students and visitors have commented upon. Many schools continue to report that challenging behaviour has persisted since the end of the pandemic hiatus. Learning is lost and every child’s potential is compromised when there is lost learning time through disruptive behaviour. We have worked very hard for Mountbatten to buck the national trend. This work continues and we appreciate the continued support from parents and carers to ensure that all our students have the best possible start in life.

Barton Peveril College - Basketball Information Evening
Barton Peveril College Sports Department is hosting a Basketball Information Evening on Monday 20 January, 7.00pm - 8.00pm.
The programme is an exciting schedule designed to fulfil the basketball potential of all students by promoting the highest standards of training, effort and competition alongside academic study.
We would like to invite basketball players to meet with coaches and staff to learn more. The evening will consist of:
A presentation
A tour of facilities
A Q&A session
It is an opportunity for players to learn more about the pathways, player development, partnerships within the area, overseas trips, and integration into college life that the program offers.
If you are the parent or carer of a child who was previously looked after (this is anyone who has been in the care system and now resides with you under an adoption process or similar) there is support available in school to help ensure your child has the maximum opportunity to reach their full educational potential.
Please email Natalie.Harper@mountbatten.school if you would like to know more about what we can do to support your child's educational progress and achievement.
This is voluntary information sharing and will be handled with sensitivity; we would request documentation of the adoption order or similar, which would be kept securely and confidentially.

Year 10 and 11 parent and student information evening T Levels
South Hampshire College Group would like to invite parents, carers and students to the T Level Parents Information Evenings. The events will be held at Southampton College, Eastleigh College, Fareham College and CEMAST. Each evening will begin with an introductory presentation from our Vice Principals, followed by a tour led by our Curriculum Directors and Lecturers. During the tour, attendees will receive detailed information about work experience, structure, highlights and possible progression routes for our T Level courses.
Whilst the Vice Principle presentations will be similar at each event, the tours and T Level subjects vary by college, so if you are interested in more than one college, please be sure to sign up to more than one event.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions and speak to current T Level students, our lecturers, Work Experience team and local universities. To book, please click on the links below:
Last half-term in RSHE, students made a great start to their discussion-based lessons where they explored a range of topics. The lessons are taught in tutor groups once a week. Teachers use a range of oracy-based strategies, including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking skills. Below are links to more information regarding RSHE.
Students will be exploring healthy living this half-term. They will be identifying what type of lifestyle they lead by considering their diet and exercise habits. They will also consider dental hygiene and pressures from the cosmetics industry. Energy drinks and caffeine will also be discussed, as well as the importance of sleep and brain development. Vaping will be the final topic in this healthy living series and we hope students will recognise the known and unknown risks associated with e-cigarettes.
Year 8
Students will be exploring the online world this half-term. They will be considering the impacts of social media and their responsibilities when it comes to online activity. They will also discuss the stress that can come with managing various online platforms and how media sources can have bias, misinformation and disinformation and it is therefore important to validate the information they view.
Year 9
Students will be exploring internet safety this half-term. They will consider how to use the internet safely and appropriately, as well as identifying what digital resilience is and how to develop it to keep themselves safe and happy. Students will also be completing their #beewell surveys this half-term, which will provide us with an insight into the mental health and wellbeing of our students, which helps inform our RSHE themes and in school support.
Year 10
Students will be exploring mental health and wellbeing this half-term. They will consider who are role models and what they may aspire to be like now and in the future. They will also consider how to reframe negative thinking to take a more positive approach to challenges and ways in which they can support mental and emotional wellbeing, including mindfulness and signposting on how to access quality support and guidance if ever needed.
Year 11
Students will be completing some Emergency First Aid training which will lead to a St John’s ambulance certificate if students fulfill the practical elements of the session. Students will also explore peer pressure and ways to manage it as well as discussing risky behaviours and lifestyle choices such as substance abuse.
Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
We have our reporting system 'TootToot', where students can report anonymously or with their name.
Childline also offers a range of support and resources.
