Whilst the rain certainly hasn’t been welcome this week, it has been a pleasure to welcome the students back to school and the start of the new academic year. Our new Year 7 children have been a credit to their school and their families, showing lovely manners and dressed smartly in their uniforms wearing them with pride. My heartfelt thanks go to all the parents and carers who have made sure that their children have started the new academic year in the correct uniform and equipped for their lessons. It makes such a difference and helps our young people have real pride in themselves and their work: valuable qualities for the workplace.
The school site has seen some changes over the summer holidays. The new building at the front of the school is now complete. It houses the new reception, medical room and admin and finance staff. In the next few weeks, the fencing and gating at the front of school will be finished too. This work has been undertaken so that we can have a single point of entry, thereby creating a gated community during the school day to enhance the safety of the students. When you arrive on the school site, reception is now by the main vehicle entrance. If you need to collect your child during the school day, then please report to reception and your child will meet you there.
The start of the new term is always like New Year – full of resolutions and an opportunity to change, do things differently and, hopefully, better. One of the most effective ways to bring about your child’s success is to create clear, simple routines: not an easy task when parenting a teenager! I make no apologies for repeating that research has shown that during adolescence, teenagers need between 9 and 9.5 hours of sleep yet, on average, they get about 7 hours. Sadly, for some youngsters, their sleep is interrupted by their friends messaging them during the night which then leads to fatigue, irritability and a lack of concentration during the day. As a parent/carer, if you can help your child to get into good sleep habits and make the bedroom a mobile phone free zone, then you’ll be creating positive wellbeing for your child.
As you can imagine, it was a joy to celebrate with last year’s Year 11 students on Results Day two weeks ago. The Class of 2024 achieved the best results that the school has seen and those results reflected their hard work and effort over the last five years as well as the hard work and support from their parents, carers and families. A sincere thank you to the many parents and carers who contacted the school and staff to express their thanks for the support given to their child during their time in the school.
Naturally, we want to create the enabling conditions in school to ensure that all of our students benefit from an environment where they can learn and succeed. I’m sure that you will agree that if all of our young people follow these simple steps, then success will follow:
I always try my hardest and learn to the best of my ability.
I take responsibility for my learning and the learning of others, allowing everyone to learn without disruption.
I always do as I am asked, the first time I am asked.
I show kindness and respect to others, their opinions and their personal space.
I am in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing.
I take pride in the presentation of all my work.
I always have the correct equipment and wear my uniform correctly.
I have good manners.
We very much value your support in helping our young people to be the very best that they can be so that they enjoy the success they deserve to move on to the next stage of their lives. I hope that the new school year brings much happiness and great achievement to our young people.

Post Looked After Children (PLAC)
If you are the parent or carer of a child who was previously looked after (this is anyone who has been in the care system and now resides with you under an adoption process or similar) there is support available in school to help ensure your child has the maximum opportunity to reach their full educational potential.
Please email Natalie.Harper@mountbatten.school if you would like to know more about what we can do to support your child's educational progress and achievement.
This is voluntary information sharing and will be handled with sensitivity; we would request documentation of the adoption order or similar, which would be kept securely and confidentially.
#BeeWell Programme - Years 9 and 10
What is BeeWell?
#BeeWell is a programme that aims to understand the issues that matter to young people through an annual wellbeing survey delivered to secondary schools. The results are anonymised and combined so that school can act on what young people are saying and make positive change. In 2023, 22,000 young people in Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton had their voices heard through the #BeeWell Programme.
The Survey
Students in Year 9 and 10 are invited to complete the survey at school between Tuesday 1 October and 29 November 2024. As parent/carers, you have the option to opt your child out, or they may do so themselves, but we would encourage all students to take part,
The Results
Schools will receive a confidential, bespoke feedback report to provide insight into the wellbeing of students. All individual surveys are anonymous, however collectively, will be able to inform improvements.

If your child does not wish to participate in the survey, please complete the opt-out form via the button below.

Welcome to the Library
The school library is a vibrant hub of learning and exploration, offering students a welcoming space to nurture their curiosity and expand their knowledge. Open before school, during break times and after school, the library is well stocked with a wide range of books, from fiction to reference materials providing resources for both academic study and personal enjoyment.
Equipped with comfortable reading areas, study areas, and digital access, it serves as a crucial support for students' educational journeys. Our dedicated librarian, Mrs Cowley, is always on hand to assist with research, recommend new reads, and guide students in developing essential literacy and information skills.
The school library offers more than just books — it’s a place to relax, explore new interests, and connect with fellow students.
During Monday lunchtimes, the library hosts Silent Reading, a peaceful escape to dive into your favourite book, unwind, and boost your imagination.
If you prefer a bit more interaction, join us on Thursdays for Board Game Club, where strategy and fun come together as you challenge friends to classic and modern games.
For the book lovers, the Book Club on Friday offers a chance to share your thoughts on the latest reads and discover new literary gems.
Whether you want quiet time or social fun, there’s something for everyone in the library at lunchtime!

Year 7
This half-term, Year 7 will be looking at how to deal with starting secondary school, dealing with change and how to develop more self-confidence. They will also explore how friendships form, may change and develop as well as how communication is a valuable tool to manage friendships. Year 7 will then look at how to show empathy, compassion and care.
Year 8
Year 8 will be starting with identifying their personal strengths and achievements. They will then explore personal safety and move on to looking at the meaning of discrimination and prejudice and what protective characteristics are. After this, they will learn about Black History month and gender identity before discussing attitudes towards mental health.
Year 9
Year 9 will be looking at what a healthy relationship is and how to recognise the features of them. They will explore the meaning of commitment within a range of different relationships and the meaning of consent. Once they understand the meaning of consent they will consider the types of freedom and capacity to consent before moving on to exploring families, marriage and changes within relationships and families.
Year 10
Year 10 will be discussing the values required to secure positive relationships and what choices each individual has within their relationships. This includes intimate and platonic relationships, in-person and online. Negative behaviours such as pressure and coercion is then covered to build on the consent lessons delivered in Year 9. Victim blaming and positive role models are then explored.
Year 11
Year 11 will be exploring stereotypes and individual identities, including gender. They will consider their own ambitions and aspirations before hearing from some colleges in readiness for their post-16 applications. They will then recap the need for good sleep hygiene and how to deal with different emotions ahead, in the context of the exam year ahead.
Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
We have our reporting system 'TootToot', where students can report anonymously or with their name.
