I love this time of year at Mountbatten as we hopefully start the long hot summer to make up for the dismal wet winter we have had. When we feel the grass can take it, we will open our wonderful large field area and students will get to enjoy the huge space that it provides to play sports or just find a quiet spot to chat.
I am sure that parents of students in other year groups will forgive me for focusing on Year 11 at this time of the year – your time will come. Easter is always the kick-start to the exam season, with us returning last week to Language speaking examinations language which were promptly followed by Art Examinations this week. The written examinations start on Tuesday 7 May with Number And Measure, Religious Studies on Thursday 9 May, and then on Friday 10 May we have the first Science Exam, so everyone will have started.
As a parent, I know this is a challenging time to support your child and you will know best how independent they are and how much and what support they will need. I have found that the simple things can be the most important at this time – are they eating appropriately? Are they getting enough sleep? Have they got a clear pencil case with all the equipment they need? Do they know when their exams are? Are they revising, but also taking time to rest and do something fun? It is likely to be stressful at times, but with our joint support, I know they will be successful.
This intensive period ends with the last exam on 18 June, and then we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief. We can then also look forward to the celebrations. First up, is the Year 11 Prom 2024 which will be held in early July, a wonderfully joyous event. We then look forward to Thursday 22 August when we invite students to come in to collect their GCSE results and we get to celebrate the fruits of all their hard work together.
Thank you to all parents for their ongoing support of the school.

Year 11 Parent/Carers: Be Exam Ready!
Please click the button below to view information regarding a parent/carer & child online workshop. This will take place on Saturday 27 April, 10.00am - 11.00am and will be 1 hour of revision and exam tips.
Please take 10-15 minutes to watch this poignant and thought-provoking rail safety video with your child. Some students may watch this in school but the video contains a very sad but very real story that is being shared in the hope of helping to ensure no other young person suffers, as these young people and their families did.
In July 2024, The Mountbatten School will be embarking on the school's second sports tour to South Africa. We will be travelling with 66 students and 7 staff from our Football, Netball and Rugby squads.
As part of the tour, students commit to a two-year project which involves significant fundraising and charity work. Since 2014, our tours have supported the charity Pebbles Project.
Mr Robinson (Trip Leader) has organised a charity blind auction to raise money for the Pebbles Project.

Year 8 Careers Insight
Year 8 students have now completed the topic of ‘careers working with animals’ and have had the opportunity to listen to Charlotte Springall, owner of Springall Riding School, about the benefits and advantages of working with horses, as well as a brief insight into her background. Charlotte is a British Team Rider, accomplished horse breeder and is involved with teaching ‘Riding for the Disabled’.
Year 9 Careers Insight
For the past three weeks, students have learnt about the values, challenges and different careers available in the NHS during their weekly careers education lessons. To round off the topic, we invited an employee from a prosthetics manufacturer who works closely with the NHS to talk about his career pathway and the various prosthetics and orthotics they manufacture.
Year 10 Work Experience
This week students were reading out to each other the lovely feedback comments they have received following their work experience. They have also received their feedback forms to take home, providing the employer has returned them to us.
We would be very grateful if you could complete the parent and carer survey to share your experience of the programme with us. The link can be found here.
Year 10 College Assembly
This week we welcomed Barton Peveril’s principal (Rob Temple), to the school to talk to students about the different courses available at the college, as well as the upcoming taster day and open event.

Click on the tabs below to find out what each year group is exploring in RSHE this term!
Year 7
Students have been discussing what a diverse society looks like and what the protected characteristics of the equalities act are. This has led to identifying and challenging stereotypes and what discrimination is. Students are also exploring what prejudice and bias looks like within the media and how they can research and find their own facts. Students are also identifying who their role models are and what influences they have upon them as well as how to manage peer pressure.
Year 8
Students have been busy identifying what constitutes a healthy relationship and discussing how to form positive and healthy new friendships. This moves onto exploring their online activity and behaviours with the aim to reduce online risks and develop their digital resilience. Students also explore the importance of human rights and responsibilities within society, the school environment and the workplace and how to challenge discrimination.
Year 9
Students have been identifying how relationships can change and evolve. This has also included considering loss. Family dynamics and marriage is explored and Year 9 revisit what constitutes a positive relationship. Contraception and the risk of sexually transmitted infections is shared with the students.
Year 10
Students have been reflecting on their work experience placements by sharing their experiences and feedback with one another. They have also been completing their work books and evidence in preparation for their entry to the Prince’s Trust World of Work certification. They will then move on to considering role models and aspirations before revisiting online safety.
Year 11
Students complete their RSHE program this half-term ahead of their exams but have spent some time reflecting on their RSHE journey throughout their time at Mountbatten from Year 7 to Year 11. They have discussed some sensitive topics around pregnancy, miscarriage and abortion with maturity. Positive relationships and consent have been explored and developed from their work in Year 10. We hope that our RSHE curriculum will help our students stay healthy and happy during and long after their exams.
Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
We have our reporting system 'TootToot', where students can report anonymously or with their name.
