You may have read in the news last week how the Department for Education has published new guidance regarding the use of mobile phones in schools. The guidance strongly endorses our policy of, ‘Never used, seen or heard’ stating that, ‘we owe it to our children to do what we can to remove distractions and enable them to be fully present and engaged in the classroom’.
But how do you manage screen time at home? This is a question which my wife and I are starting to ask, as our two children become ever more tech savvy. For some top tips on managing screen time please click the button or view the poster below.

Congratulations - Romsey Hockey Club
Arla D and Skye H, both 7TDN played for Romsey Hockey Club’s U12 Girls' team in the countywide ‘In2 Hockey’ annual tournament on Sunday.
After being undefeated in their five pool matches and despite the weather, they played and beat Trojans in the semi final 2-1, taking them to the final where they triumphed 2-1 against a strong Winchester team. Both goals in the final were scored by Arla. Their next step is regionals, in London!
Congratulations, Arla and Skye, a fantastic achievement.
Congratulations - Trojans Hockey Club
Three of our Year 7 boys also took part in the Hampshire 'In2Hockey' tournament at Southampton Sports Centre on Sunday, in the windy and wet conditions!
There were 14 teams split into 2 pools - the boys all play for Trojans, coming second in their pool, with 5 wins and only 1 loss.
Sadly, they lost the semi-final and lost a 3rd place play-off on penalties.
Great goals from Hamish N 7EHK and Luke B 7JSL and phenomenal goalkeeping from Jamie P 7TDN.

Year 10 Work Experience

Students will work towards the qualification in their RSHE lessons and depending on the quality of work submitted, can achieve either a level 1 or 2 certificate.
Year 10 College Taster Days
An email has been sent to parents and carers about the upcoming college taster days in the summer term. Whilst they are not compulsory to attend, we strongly urge students to take part in this opportunity as it will help them to experience what college life is like and allows them to experience their chosen college campus. Year 10s will start applying to college from September, which is just over 6 months away!
Please note that Sparsholt College does not offer a taster day for Year 10 students, but there will be an opportunity to take part in a taster day following their GCSE exams next summer (only if students have applied to the college).
What is the difference between the open days and college taster days?
College Open Days welcome students and their parents/carers to have a look around the whole college, allowing them to interact with all departments and often have representatives available from Student Support, Transport and the Admissions Department.
College Taster Days allow students to take part in a variety of taster lessons to help them decide whether they can envisage studying the subjects at college. During the taster day there are no opportunities to interact with other departments.
National Careers Week
Next week we will celebrate National Careers Week with a range of year group assemblies. There are various webinars available throughout the week where students can find out more about different career paths available to them. Attached is also a parent/carers guide for National Careers Week.

The event takes place on Tuesday 5 March, 5.00pm -6.00pm. Click here to sign up.

Click on the tabs below to find out what each year group is exploring in RSHE this term!
Year 7
This half-term, Year 7 will be exploring how to lead healthy lifestyles by considering what health and fitness is before identifying the need for good food, sleep and exercise habits. Students will also explore the impacts of energy drinks and caffeine-based drinks on health and fitness and the law around the sale and consumption of some products. Students will also consider how oral hygiene is important and how lifestyle can affect teeth and gums. Vaping will also be explored, providing students with the opportunity to consider the law, recent guidance and the worrying effects of using E-cigarettes.
Year 8
This half-term, Year 8 will be exploring healthy lifestyles and good physical health, as well as how to maintain emotional wellbeing and self-worth, when using social media. Media bias and different media sources will also be covered, so we can encourage students to consider what influences they may be exposed to and what the reliability and validity of different news sources are.
Year 9
Year 9 will begin the new year by considering what supports healthy living and how to lead a healthy lifestyle at this age. This also includes how to maintain positive mental health and self-worth when using social media. Students will consider how their own self-perception and internet use may be linked and correlated. Students will participate in some basic First Aid training looking at CPR and the recovery position, as well as the use of an AED.
Year 10
Year 10 will kick-start the new term with a recap on healthy living and positive lifestyle choices. Students will be given the opportunity to identify which strategies suit them best when finding relaxation techniques. This then leads into exploring the impacts of drug and alcohol use. Students will consider their current understanding and perceptions of various substances, explore how to manage the risks associated with their use and how to keep themselves and others safe, as well as where to seek advice and information in the future. The influences of gang culture and county lines will also be explored.
Year 11
Year 11 will start the term exploring different stereotypes and ways to challenge them. They will identify what their core values are and how to consider those of others. Students will look at how people identify and explore how they respect the decisions of others. They will also explore why some teenagers are likely to partake in risky behaviours.
Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
We have our reporting system 'TootToot' where students can report anonymously or with their name.
Childline also offer a range of support and resources.
