In preparation for the mock examinations which begin in February 2024, I thought it would be helpful to remind all students and parents of some of the top tips for revision. The GCSEs are 2 years in length and are purposely designed so that revision is throughout, rather than simply at the end of the course.
The Forgetting Curve highlights how quickly we can all let things go, which is why mind maps and flashcards are excellent strategies to support our long-term memory. If your child has not yet created a revision timetable, please encourage them to do so. There are many free ones out there, like this, that are an excellent way of mapping what to revise and when.
Students should schedule small chunks of revision and vary the subjects so that they begin to build some momentum. Once they start, it will become easier and a part of their daily routine.
Students will be preparing for 8 to 10 different GCSE examinations. They should be gathering their notes, exercise books, textbooks, and resources for each subject, in separate piles and folders. If they do not know the exam board, they must ask their teacher so that they can look online at past papers too.
In short, do encourage your child to: be organised, ask questions, self-quiz and test, be prepared, work in a quiet space and chunk revision so that there is more chance of retaining the information.
We wish all of our students the best of luck as they start preparing for their forthcoming exams.

Music Tuition - Spring Term
We would like to remind you that music tuition fees for the Spring Term 2024 are now due. Please could you check your Scopay account to check the amount and make your payment.
Fees for the Spring term are £95.00, with the exception of piano tuition which is £120.00 (if your child is eligible for Pupil Premium, please be aware that Pupil Premium discounts will be applied to their accounts soon).
Thank you to Leah C 10AWE/RAR, Anastasia O 10HCO/KMN and Noah M 10HCS who supported Mrs Brooks at Romsey’s Charity Fair on Saturday 18 November. Year 10 have been donating teddies to raise money towards their heart screening in 2024.
It was great to hear our students raising awareness of the charity, CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) which is so close to our Mountbatten heart. The students raised just over £130.00. We will continue to fundraise over the next year.
Keeping our children safe on site
In order to keep all of our students safe, this is just a quick reminder. Thank you for using the lane outside the school site or making alternative arrangements to help us to facilitate a safe arrival and departure from school. Parents and carers should not be dropping off or picking up children inside the school gates, unless permission has been given by a member of staff due to extenuating circumstances.
Christmas is just around the corner...
With Christmas approaching, we know that many children will be spending time online and others will perhaps receive an upgraded/different device at this time of year! Online technology provides new opportunities for our students’ learning and growth, but it can also expose them to new types of risks. Have you signed up to National Online Safety yet, as a parent?
We are seeking a Higher Level Teaching Assistant or Teaching Assistant to work in the classroom supporting students with a range of special educational needs.

Commercial awareness, an understanding of how business and industries work, is one of the key skills employers are looking for, especially during the application process for apprenticeships and the highly competitive degree apprenticeships. Students can gain commercial awareness through various mediums, such as:
Newsletters for students from industry bodies (LawCareers etc.)
Students who take part in a career event, work experience or programme should email their attendance or completion certificate to the Careers Department. We will give students a presentation folder to keep their certificates safe and award epraise points for commitment.

Last half term in RSHE, students made a great start to their discussion based lessons where they have explored a range of topics. The lessons are taught in tutor groups once a week. Teachers use a range of oracy based strategies including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking.
Click on the tabs below to find out what each year group is up to!
Year 7
Students will be identifying their own and others’ rights and responsibilities. This will be explored further by spending a few weeks on anti-bullying on and offline. Students will discuss what bullying is, what being an 'upstander' is and how to report concerns. They will then move on to looking at what a healthy lifestyle is and what young people can do to increase or maintain one. The half-term will finish with looking at the purpose of age restrictions and its links to safety.
Year 8
Students will be exploring the different types of relationships as well as discussing the qualities and characteristics of healthy relationships. This will link to discussing the meaning of consent and be introduced to contraception. We will also cover safe internet relationships and how to stay safe online.
Year 9
Students will be following a story over a few weeks exploring peer pressure and gang culture. This will include discussions on lifestyle choices, peer pressure, drug and alcohol use and knife crime. They will also look at the impacts of the use of e-cigarettes.
Year 10
Students will be exploring the values of relationships, relationship choices and online relationships. They will be discussing pressure and coercion in the upcoming lessons and also how we should treat victims/survivors.
Year 11
Students will be completing some Emergency First Aid training which will lead to a St John’s ambulance certificate, if students fulfil the practical elements of the session. Students will also cover self-examination for Breast and Testicular cancer. An example of a video on self-examination can be found here: Check Your Pair – A How-To Guide. They will also cover sexual health and donor options.
Should your child wish to seek support in any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
We have our reporting system 'TootToot' where students can report anonymously or with their name.
